Baseballs — Buyer's Guide
Youth League Game Balls
Youth league game balls are certified for specific governing bodies and must match the requirements of the league in which they are used. MacGregor's youth ball lineup covers the full range of organizational certifications — the #76C and #76C1 for Little League, #74 for Cal Ripken, #74 for Babe Ruth, #75 and #75CY for Pony League, #72 for Dixie Youth, #73C for Senior Little League, and #78 for Dixie Boys Majors. Each ball is built to the cushioned cork center and leather cover specifications required by its respective governing body. Confirm your league's approved ball list before ordering, as certification requirements vary by division and age group within each organization.
High School and College Game Balls
High school and collegiate game balls are built to tighter tolerances than youth league balls, with full-grain leather covers, higher seam height, and cork-rubber cores wound to NFHS and NCAA specifications. The MacGregor #97 Professional League baseball is the primary competition ball for programs at this level. Flat-seam constructions from Mark 1 and Wilson are available for programs whose conference or state association rules specify flat-seam balls for pitching consistency.
Practice Baseballs
Practice balls allow programs to preserve game ball condition by using a separate inventory for batting practice, fielding drills, and bullpen sessions. The MacGregor #79 leather practice ball provides a realistic game-feel at a lower cost per dozen than competition balls. The #79PY synthetic practice ball offers additional durability for high-volume use on turf surfaces or in batting cages where leather covers wear more quickly. The Wilson A1030 flat-seam practice ball is suited for pitching machine use where seam height and surface consistency affect ball feed accuracy.
Safety and Reduced-Impact Baseballs
Safety baseballs use a reduced-compression construction that lowers ball hardness while maintaining regulation size and weight for realistic skill development. The MacGregor Safe/Soft series is available in Level 1 (ages 5–7) and Level 5 (ages 8–12) severity index ratings. Level 1 provides the greatest impact reduction for the youngest players; Level 5 transitions toward a more standard ball feel as players develop. These balls are appropriate for introductory programs, coach-pitch leagues, and any setting where reducing the risk of impact injury is a program priority.
Tee Balls
The MacGregor #56 indoor/outdoor tee ball is available in 12-packs for pre-tee and introductory programs. Rubber construction holds up to high-volume use on both indoor and outdoor surfaces without the wear issues associated with leather covers at the tee ball level.
