Shot put weight requirements vary by gender and competition level under NFHS and NCAA rules. The standard weights are 4K (girls high school and women's collegiate), 5.44K/12 lb (boys high school), and 7.26K/16 lb (men's collegiate). Confirm the correct weight for each division before ordering — mixing competition weights across a practice inventory creates confusion during competition preparation and can result in athletes training with an incorrect implement weight relative to their event.
Turned iron shot puts are the standard for outdoor competition at the high school level. Steel shot puts from Nelco provide a higher-density construction in a smaller diameter for the same weight — a consideration for athletes who prefer a more compact grip. Brass shot puts are a practice option that provides similar feel to competition iron at a lower cost per implement. Indoor rubber shot puts are required for indoor competition on gymnasium floors where hard iron or steel implements would cause surface damage.
Discus weight requirements are 1K for girls high school and women's collegiate competition and 1.6K for boys high school and men's collegiate competition. Rubber discus are the standard for outdoor competition and practice at the high school level — durable, weather-resistant, and appropriate for all standard throwing circle surfaces. Black rubber models are available in both official competition and practice grades; practice discus use a lower-cost rubber compound suited for high-volume training use where implement wear is expected.
Wood discus provide a different feel and flight characteristic than rubber models — the wood construction produces a slightly different grip texture and spin release that some athletes and coaches prefer for competition use. Olympic and Poplar wood discus are available in both 1K and 1.6K weights. The Gold Lo-Spin discus is designed for developing throwers who have not yet achieved consistent spin technique, providing a more stable and predictable flight path during the technical development phase. The Challenger discus is a mid-range composite option for programs that want a step above recreational rubber without the cost of a competition-grade wood implement.
