Football Equipment — Buyer's Guide

Goal Posts and Accessories

Football goal posts for institutional use are available in single-post gooseneck and two-post configurations. Single-post gooseneck systems are the standard for high school and collegiate fields, providing an unobstructed line of sight from the back of the end zone and meeting current NFHS and NCAA uprights height and width specifications. Two-post systems remain in use at youth and recreational facilities where installation cost and structural simplicity are priorities.

Goal post padding is available to wrap exposed post bases and crossbars in high-contact zones, a requirement at most scholastic competition levels for player safety compliance. Padding is sold separately and is available in multiple lengths to fit standard and extended post configurations. Replacement hardware, anchor sleeves, and ground sockets are stocked for facilities maintaining existing goal post installations.

Down Indicators and Chain Sets

Down indicator and chain set systems are required game operation equipment for any program running official or semi-official competition. Standard chain sets consist of two poles connected by a ten-yard chain with a down indicator marker. Institutional-grade sets use heavy-gauge steel poles with durable down number flags rated for repeated seasonal use.

Box sets and clip-style down markers are available for programs that need a more compact sideline operation. Replacement chains, clips, and marker flags are available separately for maintaining existing sets without full replacement. Youth and recreational programs running shorter fields should confirm chain length requirements with their governing body before ordering.

Sideline Markers and Pylons

Sideline markers and end zone pylons define the field boundaries required for official play. Pylons are available in standard orange foam and weighted rubber base configurations — rubber base pylons are better suited for fields where lightweight foam pylons shift position during play or in high-wind conditions. Sets of eight end zone pylons plus two goal line pylons are the standard configuration for a regulation field setup.

Yard line markers and sideline indicator sets are available for programs that need to mark field boundaries on surfaces where permanent field markings are not present, including multi-use athletic fields, recreational parks, and temporary competition sites.

Training Dummies, Pads, and Practice Equipment

Blocking dummies and tackling shields are core practice equipment for linemen development, defensive drill work, and contact conditioning. Stand-up dummies are available as free-standing units and sled-mounted configurations. Free-standing dummies allow individual drill use without additional equipment; sled-mounted dummies provide resistance training for groups and are available in one-man through seven-man sled configurations for programs with larger practice squads.

Handheld blocking shields and forearm pads give coaches and players a controlled contact surface for technique drills without full-contact exposure. Chute trainers and agility bags are also available for programs running structured offensive and defensive line development programs. All contact training equipment should be inspected regularly for foam compression and cover integrity, as degraded padding reduces both effectiveness and safety.

Shoulder Pads

Shoulder pads are available in skill position and lineman configurations to match the protection requirements of different player roles. Skill position pads — designed for quarterbacks, receivers, defensive backs, and linebackers — prioritize range of motion and low-profile fit. Lineman pads provide extended coverage across the chest, back, and shoulder cap to handle the sustained contact demands of interior line play.

Proper fit is critical for both protection and legal compliance under NFHS and NCAA rules. Pads should be sized to the player's chest measurement and weight, not by position alone. Programs outfitting large rosters should confirm sizing ranges across their player pool before placing bulk orders to avoid fit issues that require returns or exchanges mid-season.

Flag Football Equipment

Flag football programs require a different equipment set than tackle football — the primary items are flag belts, flags, and a regulation-size football. Flag belts are available in clip-style and Velcro configurations. Clip-style belts release more cleanly on contact and are preferred for competitive flag leagues; Velcro belts are a more economical option for recreational and youth programs where clean release is less critical.

Complete flag football sets — including belts, flags, and a ball — are available for programs starting a new league or replacing a full inventory. Individual flags and belt sets are also available separately for programs that need to supplement existing equipment or replace worn components mid-season.

Footballs

Game and practice footballs are available in full-size (NCAA and NFHS), youth, and pee-wee configurations to cover all competitive levels and age groups. Composite leather covers are the standard for competition at the high school level and above, providing consistent grip across varying weather conditions. Rubber footballs are available for recreational programs and physical education departments where durability and low maintenance cost across heavy use are the primary considerations.

Kicking footballs are available separately for programs that want dedicated balls for field goal and kickoff practice, preserving game ball condition. Bulk practice ball sets are available for programs outfitting full squad training sessions.

Turf and Track Protectors

Turf and track protectors are used to prevent surface damage when football activities take place on synthetic turf fields or rubberized tracks that serve multiple sports. Protector mats distribute load and reduce concentrated wear from cleated footwear, portable goal posts, sideline equipment, and spectator foot traffic on premium surface installations.

Programs that share a synthetic turf field with soccer, lacrosse, or track programs should coordinate protector deployment with facilities staff to ensure coverage is in place during any activity where cleat pattern or equipment weight could damage the surface or its underlying infill system.

Gear Accessories

Gear accessories include the supporting equipment items that keep a football program operational across a full season — helmet hardware, chin straps, mouthguards, practice jersey numbers, equipment bags, and related items. These are consumable and replacement items that programs should inventory at the start of each season to identify what needs restocking before practice begins.
